March
March is a pleasant market town with a friendly reputation and a meandering river that's often busy with colourful boats
cruising the Fenland waterways. The river winds its way through the town centre with its elaborate fountain, past the
park and beyond the pretty riverside gardens. A town trail and charming riverside walksare the best way to take in the
high spots and learn a little of the local legends. South of the town the medieval church of St Wendreda has a stunning
double hammer beam roof with 120 carved angels.
Ely
Nestled in the heart of the Fens, this beautiful city is full of history, charm and beauty. Formerly an island
and surrounded by dramatic lowlands, the city rises into the big wide-open skies. Dominating the skyline is one of England's
largest and most impressive Cathedrals. It towers across the Fens for miles around. Known locally as 'The ship
of the Fens' it is famous for its unique Octagon tower.
Cambridge
Your visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to nearby Cambridge. The city has 2000 years of history
through its stunning architecture and museums. You can combine exploring the city by stopping off at one of the many
cafes, bars and restaurants. Cambridge is also great for shopping and has a range of quality shops unique to the city
around the historic streets. There is a thriving market in the centre that runs 7 days a week. The river Cam and
world famous colleges should not be missed.
Newmarket
Newmarket proudly flies the flag for British racing, one of the most passionate sports in the world. With the two
racecourses standing proudly on the edge of the town, Newmarket is the greatest shop window that horseracing could ever hope
to have.
WildFowl and Wetlands Centre Welney nr Wisbech
The dramatic wetlands at Welney, on the Ouse Washes are home to some of the most spectacular winter gatherings of wild
swans. On an evening visit, between November and February you will see hundreds of swans and ducks being fed on a floodlit
lagoon. The noise can be deafening and the weather cold, but from your lakeside seat in the heated observatory you will
be cosy and warm. Afterwards spend some time in the new eco vistor centre which has some exciting interactive displays
as well as a cafe and shop.
Butterfly and Wildlife Park, Long Sutton
Here you can walk through a Tropical House of exotic butterflies, a Reptile House with snakes and a crocodiles and a
Creepy Crawlie House and even an Ant Room. Outdoors there are 15 acres of parkland with a Bird of Prey centre where
flying displays take place twice daily, and an Animal centre with Llamas, Wallabies, Possums and ponies. This attraction
truly has something for everyone, whatever their age and whatever the weather!
Fens Cycle Way
Discover a unique panorama criss crossed by waterways and offering stunning skyscapes and unforgettable sunsets.
Explore nature reserves, churches and historic market towns such as Wisbech, Downham Market, March and Ely. This route
is ideal for a leisurely two or three day cycling break.
Springfield FestivalGardens, Spalding
Here you can stroll through 25 acres of themed, educational and specialist gardens, including showcase gardens designed
by celebrity gardeners such as Charlie Dimmock, Chris Beardshaw and Kim Wilde.
Peckover House Garden, Wisbech
You will be surprised to discover a 2 acre walled garden behind the Georgian facade of Wisbech's North Brink. The
garden is Victorian in style with mature trees, colourful borders, pretty summerhouses and an orangery with trees thought
to be 300 years old.
Elgoods Brewery Garden, Wisbech
Just a short stroll from Peckover Garden is another secret garden waiting to be discovered. Elgoods Brewery Garden
has magnificent ancient trees, colourful beds and borders and a hot house with exotic plants. It also has some quirky
features. The maze shaped like a yard of ale, arches with tumbling hop vines and a pond with resident Great Crested
Newts.
